Project by Barbara O’Toole from Lewisville, Texas.

When Barbara turned 40 a few years ago, she began doing some soul searching and asked herself, "What’s my passion?" She started taking some art classes and was soon focusing on ceramics. She fell in love with ceramic tilemaking and began to apply her designs to various practical items, such as serving trays.

Materials:

sponge
4" x 4" ceramic tiles
paint
paint brushes
glaze
wood stain
wood glue
tile cutter
tile nippers
wooden tray
grout
bucket
water
grout smoother

Steps:

1. Stain and shellac the tray.

2. Wipe bisque tiles clean with a damp sponge and let dry 5 minutes.

3. Apply chosen design to tiles using trace paper and carbon paper.

4. Paint tiles using ceramic paint and let dry 12 hours.

5. Glaze tiles with two coats and let dry completely.

6. Fire in kiln. Allow to cool. Take out of kiln next day.

7. Measure designed tiles to fit in center of the tray; then measure the border (remaining area on tray around designed tiles).

8. Glue designed tiles in center of tray. Cut border tiles to fit tray and then glue in place.

9. Let tiles dry at least 2 hours.

10. Mix grout and let set for 10 to 15 minutes.

11. Squirt tray and tiles with water bottle. Apply grout and push into space between tiles. Remove excess grout; wait about 10 to 15 minutes and wipe with a damp sponge.

12. After one hour, wipe again with damp sponge and then with a dry towel. Let dry for 24 to 36 hours without moving.
