Want something crafty to add to your home decor? Check out this marbled paper vase project from guest Grace Taormina. This paper-mache technique can be used add a decorative flair to any number of objects.

Materials:
Delta Paint for Paper™
- Dynamo Blue 21101
- Garden Green 21102
- Gold 21114
Delta Easy Grip Spreaders™ 281000028 (or old credit card or stiff illustration board)
Delta Paper Plus™ Decoupage Finish 57001
wax paper or freezer wrap
white tissue paper
paper mache vase (or other objects such as plastic bowls, wood trays or garage sale finds)
1" flat paintbrush
assorted ribbons, fibers, and mesh
assorted beads

Steps:
1. Spread enough wax paper or freezer wrap to protect your working area.

2. Tear tissue paper to a manageable size. Ours are approximately 20" x 20".

3. Tear enough tissue pieces to cover the vase.

4. Squeeze and pour blue paint onto random areas of tissue paper.

5. Squeeze and pour green paint onto random areas of tissue paper.

6. Squeeze and pour gold paint onto random areas of tissue paper (Figure A).

7. Use the flat plastic spreader (or credit card/illustration board) to squeegee and spread the paint over the tissue paper (Figure B).

8. Spread the paint in a wavy pattern to create a marbled-like pattern. Try not to over work spreading the paint otherwise the colors will mix and turn muddy (Figure C).

9. Allow the paint to dry on the tissue paper overnight (make sure wax or freezer paper is under tissue paper while drying).

10. When paper is dry, tear it into smaller pieces to make it easy to cover the vase (Figure D).

11. With paintbrush, apply decoupage medium generously to the back of tissue paper.

12. Glue pieces to vase (Figure E), overlapping seams to create seamless color (Figure F).

13. Use additional decoupage medium to paint over the tissue paper once it has been glued onto the vase.

14. After all papers have been glued onto vase, brush on two additional coats of decoupage finish to cover the entire vase. Allow the finish to dry between each coat.

15. Trim top edge of vase with assorted embellishments such as mesh ribbon and assorted fibers. If desired, trim edges of ribbon or fibers with beads (Figure G).

Tips:


  • Experiment with different combinations of paint colors to fit a favorite color scheme.
  • Cover other items such as small bowls, folders, trays, glass bottles or other garage sale or thrift store finds.
  • Cut painted tissue paper into squares and glue to frames or boxes for mosaic tile looks.
