Figure C
Host Renai Ellison demonstrates an easy and fun way to create a wine-inspired serving tray.

Materials:

damp cloth
unfinished wooden tray
labels, pictures, wine-related items
scissors
white craft knife
craft glue
paint pen
acrylic polyurethane sealer
sponge brush
acrylic paint
artists brush

Steps:

  1. Wipe the surface of the tray with damp cloth and let dry. If unfinished, you might want to paint or stain the wood.

  2. Cut out and arrange images on top of the tray to create a design that you like. You can blow up or reduce images on a photocopy machine.

  3. Glue images with white craft glue and let dry well (figure A). Make sure all images are completely flat.

  4. Use a paint pen to write wine-related words on the outside of the tray.

  5. Coat with two or three coats of acrylic polyurethane sealer so that the liquids will not damage the surface (figure B).

  6. Add a lighter color of paint along the rim of the tray with an artists' brush (figure C).

Other Ideas

  • Add wine imagery to the outside of the tray.

  • Age black-and-white images before cutting them out with a wet tea bag. Dry flat, then cut out.
