Let a child's imagination run wild coming up with ideas for the clock face.
Creativity expert Courtney Watkins discusses a creative way to get children up for school: Have them make their own custom alarm clocks. Using items such as construction paper and photos, this idea can get a child's imagination flowing first thing in the morning.
  • An outdated alarm clock becomes an instant source of inspiration for a child. The more a child is allowed to customize the clock (by choosing materials, pictures, etc.), the more enthusiastic he or she will be about the final product.

  • Remove the clock face and the hands of the clock. Replace the hands with pipe cleaners, cover them with construction paper, or improvise another attachment. The hands are now flexible and colorful.

  • The numbers for the clock don't have to be numbers. Write out some of the numbers, or substitute a picture to associate with the time of day. For instance, a daisy could be used for morning wake-up hours, a peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich for noon, a crescent moon for bed time, etc.

  • When the clock is finished, simply replace the cover and allow the child to enjoy his or her own customized clock.
