Landscape designer Andrea Taylor has come up with a plan to give Gary Karp's enclosed entry courtyard a look that complements the modern style of the house itself.

The courtyard is dominated by a large, flat redwood deck. Karp uses a wheelchair and wants to keep this area open, so Taylor power washes and stains the deck to give it a fresher appearance. She surrounds it with an all-native California landscape, studded with colorful wildflowers and grasses. This makes the flat plane of the deck look like it's floating in the landscape.

The front gate is reworked so that it repeats the vertical battans on the front fence and provides a view into the entry courtyard.

In the front yard, Taylor has decided to remove all of the existing juniper bushes and replace them with a native landscape. The existing traditional mailbox is replaced by a simple sleek box designed to match the detail on the fence and the house itself.
