The second door is hidden by a lattice screen, and the original metal security door and parch railings are replaced with wood-framed door screens.

Porch lights are replaced with modern brushed stainless-steel fixtures, and a large landing is built at the base of the primary door. Madden also removes some trees and plants to reveal the geometric style of the block construction.

She removes the rounded top of an existing gate and replaces it with a linear piece of redwood, painting the whole gate gray to match the lattice screen. She chooses a geometric design for the landscape outside the fence, using cannas and hebes.

Inside the courtyard, she uses dianella, hebe and asparagus ferns for structure, texture and color. She plants bougainvillea on the lattice screen, mixing together red and orange flowers.

On the front gate, Madden replaces the traditional house address numbers with contemporary ones, using a piece of wood from the discarded portion of the gate to mount the new numbers.
