Project by Christine French from Cleveland, Ohio

As a high school art teacher, Chris is always looking for new ways to motivate her students and build their self-esteem. When she decided to have her students add legs to their projects, the result was not only comical, but a true "a-ha" moment for Chris. She shows how her vessels evolved from there with a gourd and sausage-filling base.

Materials:

gourd
Dremel tool
pruning sheers
masking tape
newspaper
blender
water
paint-screen bag
glue
bucket
a fan
spray paint
hog casings
clear spray
feathers
hot glue
driftwood
stain
fabric paint
fabric
scissors
fuzzy yarn
paper towels
drop cloth
rubber gloves

Steps:

  1. Cut gourd in half with the dremel tool and then clean it.

  2. Use pruning sheers to cut the driftwood to fit the gourd.

  3. Attach the legs to the gourd with masking tape.

  4. Place newspaper in a blender to make the paper pulp.

  5. Remove the water from the pulp with a paint-screen bag.

  6. Mix the paper pulp with glue in a bucket.

  7. Apply the pulp over masking tape and then dry it with a fan.

  8. Paint the gourd portion with spray paint.

  9. Rinse the hog casing with water and split in half.

  10. Cover the painted part with gut and dry with a fan.

  11. Coat the entire sculpture with stain and whip it off with paper.

  12. Apply a clear coat of spray paint.

  13. Cut the feathers and add them to the top of the gourd with a hot glue gun.

  14. Use the fabric puffy paint to add dots to the legs.

  15. Cut fabric and add to the body with hot glue.

  16. Finish the piece by adding fuzzy yarn to the body and legs.
