Project by Caletha Crawford from Brooklyn, N.Y.

Who said a bridesmaid’s dress will never be used again? Not Caletha, who turned her friend’s hand-me-down dress into a stylish and fun corset purse.

Materials:

beads
ribbon
taffeta (or satin)
acetate
lace
grommets
zipper
needle/thread
purse pattern of choice

Steps:

  1. String the beads on the ribbon. Knot on either end. Repeat for second handle.

  2. Iron interfacing onto the back of the taffeta or satin.

  3. Cut out lace, taffeta and acetate according to pattern.

  4. Iron front piece of taffeta into the "V" shape. Place lace under the lip of the V and sew into place.

  5. Mark placement of grommets and insert.

  6. Sew zipper into flange.

  7. Sew handles onto bag front and back.

  8. Sew bag front and back onto zipper flange.

  9. Sew front and back of the bag together all the way around.

  10. Sew the front and back of acetate together on the sides only.

  11. Sew acetate lining into bag to "finish" off zipper. Turn bag right side out.

  12. Fold under the ends of the acetate lining and sew together.

  13. Push lining down into bag and zip closed.

  14. Lace up the front.
