Project designed by Jeen Brown.
Materials:
Wimpole Street Creations large black backpack
four Wimpole Street Creations small knit doll skins
four assorted Wimpole Street Creations small knit sweaters
silk embroidery ribbon - one yard each of four colors
four Wimpole Street Creations girl face buttons
black embroidery floss
low temperature glue
backpack kit - optional, includes black backpack, four dolls skins, four small knit sweaters, four girl face buttons and black floss
Steps:
1. Put the sweaters on the doll skins.
2. Embroider a V-shape with the silk ribbon to the center front of each sweater, using a lazy daisy stitch. Make four one-inch loops (figure A) with matching ribbon on the bottom of the sweaters for skirts (figure B).
3. Glue the dolls to the front of the backpack.
4. Glue or sew the buttons at the tops of the bodies, using six strands of black floss (figure C).
Basics of ribbon embroidery
- Use ribbon in 10- to12-inch lengths. If the ribbon is wrinkled, press it lightly on a silk setting.
- To anchor the ribbon to the needle, slip the ribbon through the eye of a chenille needle. Take the needle through the short tail of the ribbon about 1/4 inch from the end (figure D). Hold the top of the needle and pull the longer length of ribbon downward .
- To knot the ribbon, pinch a 1/2-inch tail of ribbon. Take the needle through the ribbon at point A and go through the loop created (figure E). Pull the ribbon taut to from a knot.
- Pull the ribbon gently and slowly as stitches are created. Stitches look best if the ribbon is not pulled too tightly. Loosen a tight stitch by slipping the needle under the stitch and gently lifting the stitch.
- Keep the ribbon flat by pinching the ribbon with your thumb and forefinger of the opposite hand as you take a stitch. Continue holding the ribbon as it is pulled through to prevent twisting.
Stitches used
French knot
- Bring the needle up at point A. Wrap the ribbon around the needle two to three times and hold in place (figure F). Insert the needle through the fabric at point B. Hold the ribbon taut as the needle is pulled through the fabric (figure G). Take one small anchor stitch on the back of the work to hold the French knot in place. Keep the ribbon flat for a larger French knot.
Running straight stitch
- Bring the needle up at point A, down at point B, up at point C and down at point D (figure H). Repeat to complete stems.
Lazy daisy
- Bring the needle up at point A. Bring the ribbon up and around to form a loop. Take the needle down at point B and up at C in one motion, keeping the ribbon flat. Make a small stitch over the loop and pull the needle down at point D to anchor ( figure I).
Lazy daisy variation
- Bring the needle up at point A. Place the ribbon up and around to form a loop. Take the needle down at point B. Slightly overlap the sides of the loop, not separating completely. Bring the needle up at point C, through the fabric of the ribbon, then down at point D to anchor (figure J).
