Steps:
1. To prepare the scarf, prewash and iron dry on wrong side. To stabilize, iron the silk scarf right side up, onto freezer paper. Be careful to use medium heat on iron; a hot iron is not recommended.
Tip: Dyes are full strength, and the more they are diluted, the more pastel they become. For this project, you'll use both diluted and intense dyes with only a small amount of water added. The first dye is diluted.
2. Mix the color Digital (color name for a pink/reddish color) with lots of water in a spray bottle. Use about one part dye with eight parts water.
3. Spray entire scarf. You can tell if it is the color you desire by looking at mixed dye, allowing some fading which occurs as it dries. Pay careful attention to the rolled edges, making sure they are dyed all the way through. Use the foam brush to ensure coverage.
4. While the red/pink is still wet, mix up green dye in a much more intense color in a jar. Use a foam brush to paint the edges with random strokes. It will swirl into the red/pink, making beautiful and unusual edges. Let dry for 24 hours for strongest colors.
5. Immerse or paint with a solution of dye set and cold water. Wait 5 minutes and then rinse.
6. While that is still wet, sprinkle Kosher salt into the wet green dye areas. Kosher salt is large and more effective than table salt to make another pattern on the scarf. This is an optional step, but it does add another dimension to the design.
7. Let dry for 24 hours for strongest colors and either immerse or paint with a solution of dye set and cold water. Wait 5 minutes and then rinse.
8. Using a craft stick, place some white paint on freezer paper. Using a foam brush, brush paint onto the rubber stamp. Carefully stamp onto scarf in pleasing design.
Note: In this case, Joy found it more pleasing to paint in the open area of the dove stamp, so she painted it with a small brush, filling in the dove to be completely white, rather than just an outline.
9. While that is wet, sprinkle some Pearl-Ex powdered pigment onto the dove. Blow excess dust out onto the scarf, which gives it additional subtle sparkle.
10. Let completely dry before wearing or using to adorn table.
The scarf can be hand washed and ironed dry, unless it becomes stained. In that case, dry cleaning is recommended.
