Barbara Burnett, from Design Originals, shows some easy, decorative toys and decorations that can be made from cookie cutters and other items found around the house.
Farm Pull Toys
Materials:
cow, pig and lamb 3" cookie cutters*
3 natural 10mm wood beads
acrylic paints - cream, black and dusty rose
paint brushes - various sizes
18" of jute**
3/4" buttons - 4 dark green, 4 green, 4 black
1/2" silver bell
small silk sunflower
embroidery floss - red and dark green
1/2" x 6" strip of burgundy check fabric
clear spray acrylic sealer
Goop glue or E6000
* Although the cookie cutters in this project were wood, plastic or metal may be used, as well. In those cases, be sure to use the appropriate paint, sealer, and glue.
** Jute is the glossy fiber of either of two East Indian plants, used chiefly for sacking, burlap and twine.
Painting Instructions:
- Cow - Paint entire cow white with a dusty rose muzzle and black eyes, legs, nostrils, and spots. Spray with clear acrylic spray sealer. Glue on dark green buttons as wheels. Tie bell around neck with red floss.
- Pig - Paint entire pig with dusty rose. Paint eyes, legs, and nostrils black. Spray with clear acrylic spray sealer. Glue on black buttons as wheels.
- Lamb - Paint entire lamb white with black muzzle, legs, and eyes. Spray with clear acrylic spray sealer. Glue green buttons for wheels. Tie a fabric bow and glue a sunflower onto the neck for the center of the bow. Finish each animal with pulls: Cut three 6" pieces of perle cotton, tie knots on each end and pull a bead to the end of the knot. Glue one piece to the neck of the cow, pig, and lamb.
Steps:
- Place cutter on a block of wood and with a hammer and a nail, gently tap a hole into the both sides of each cookie cutter.
- Drill a hole in the center of cinnamon sticks.
- Start threading wire through the cookie cutters adding the cinnamon sticks, buttons and beads as you go.
- When completed, curl the remaining wire on each end around a pencil.
- Tie fabric strips to wire and glue a sunflower to the fabric at one or both ends of the wire.
