Host Renai Ellison gives a pale wood grain finish to an unfinished plant stand.

Materials:
pale yellow latex paint
paintbrush and roller
mocha brown glaze
medium-grain sandpaper
softening brush
steel wool
wood finishing tool

Steps:

  1. Paint the entire surface with a base coat of pale yellow latex paint (figure A). Let dry.

  • Make light circles with a piece of medium grain sandpaper to smooth imperfections out of the surface (figure B). Brush away residue with a light brush.

  • Using a paintbrush, apply an even light coat of mocha brown glaze (figure C), patting it on to add texture (figure D).

  • Let the glaze dry then apply a coat of clear sealer.

  • Using a piece of steel wool, rub the sheen off the finish (figure E).

  • Apply a coat of paste wax as a protectant (figure F).

    To achieve more of a traditional wood grain effect:

  • Repeat the process of applying the yellow base coat and the mocha brown glaze (figure G).

  • Use the edge of a wood graining tool (figure H) to add texture by dragging the edges in vertical strokes. Make the first stroke in a downward direction then the next stroke in an upward direction (figure I), continuing across the piece in this manner until the surface is done.

  • Once glaze dries, repeat the process until you achieve the desired effect.
