Another wonderful selection of handmade items was in the Shoebox today, starting with a number of contributions from Kathy Krueger of Doraville, Ga. Kathy is another viewer who takes advantage of the free wallpaper books that are available at most wallpaper stores and departments. She sent in several of her projects, starting with her version of the Concertina Books that Suzanne McNeill made on one of our shows some time ago. Suzanne made her book to hold CDs. Kathy uses hers to hold photographs and mementoes as well as comments to people who are ill, retiring, having a baby, etc. Her students have made them for their friends and parents. But what made Kathy’s books so special was not just what they were made for, but what they were made from--wallpaper--the beautiful wallpaper samples that she selected. Though Kathy did admit that a large home improvement company in her area has told their employees to simply throw the wallpaper sample books away, Kathy persevered and apparently was successful because each of the three books she sent in had a different look and a different theme.

But...in addition to the Concertina Books, Kathy also sent in her version of several small accordion books, cds1744_4f also seen on our show, as well as some delightful tag art bookmarks and angels, all of her own design. The distinguishing thing about each of the items Kathy sent to us was the in-relief cut-outs that she added to each project. All were cut from the same or coordinating wallpaper used in the project, and many were placed on top of a foam pop-out so they really stood out in relief and added a delightful touch.

But it wasn’t just Kathy’s wallpaper projects that found their way into the Shoebox today. Jean Watt of Shreveport, La., also sent in some handsome contributions that were practical as well as pretty. Jean makes little books by covering 3-1/2-inch-square sticky note pads and adding embellishments. The covers are wallpaper-covered cardboard on the outside and gift wrap on the inside, embellished on the outside with streamers of fiber and ribbon hanging from the top of the spine. To make them practical as well as pretty, she adds a mini gel pen along with the hanging fibers.

All in all, it was another Bonanza day for the Shoebox!
