Host Kathi Cardinalli explains how to create 3-D framed miniatures with a shadow box
(see photo at right).
Materials:
foam core
scissors
shadow box with a glass front (available at craft stores and stores that sell miniature supplies)
glue
fabric
color photocopies of scenery
floral putty
miniature furniture and accessories
reindeer moss
wrapping paper or other paper with window images
wax adhesive for miniatures (available at stores that sell miniature supplies)
birthday candles
nuts (the tool kind, not the eating kind)
* Note: These materials are merely suggestions. You can use any number of other items to make miniatures.
Steps:
- Cut foam core to fit the walls of the box (figure A). Use glue to cover it with the fabric of your choice for walls and another fabric for a rug.
- Place foam-core walls and floor inside the box.
- Glue a photograph of fire to the foam core and cut out. Use floral putty to stick the fire inside the fireplace. Add the fireplace to the box (figure B).
- Stuff floral putty into tiny urns and add reindeer moss to create potted greenery (figure C). Place urns around the fireplace.
- Cut out a window from wrapping paper (or magazine or wherever you might find it). Cut out an outdoor scene that has been photocopied from a magazine to fit the window. Glue the outdoor scene in the window, and glue the window to the foam core. Cut out foam-core window and stick it to the shadow box wall with wax adhesive (figure D).
- Cut a birthday candle in half and stick it inside the nut to create a candle and candleholder for a mantel. Stick it in place on the mantel with the wax adhesive.
- Place floral putty in a tiny pot, add sticks to create an tree and place that inside the box.
- Add miniature furniture or other accents as desired.
