Guest Dawn Ackerman designed and demonstrated this project.
Materials:
papier-mache, resin or hard plastic fruit
various handmade/handpainted papers , including sheer and lace papers
polyvinyl acetate (PVA) adhesive or other archival , clear-drying white
glue
dye ink pad
metallic gold pigment ink pad
metallic gold embossing powder
gold leafing
gold leafing adhesive
crackle cube rubber stamp
Steps:
1. Apply small torn pieces of paper to the fruit, overlapping edges to completely cover the surface. Continue layering papers to achieve a smooth transition between colors as well as to create a mottled appearance to the overall color composition (figure A). Allow to dry.
2. Using the crackle cube and dye ink, stamp random crackles on the fruit (figure B). Allow to dry.
3. Using the gold pigment ink and the crackle stamp, stamp random crackles on the fruit and emboss with gold embossing powder. This crackling is an accent, so do not cover the entire fruit this time.
4. Paint the stem of the fruit with adhesive, apply embossing powder and emboss . Alternatively, apply adhesive and use leafing to cover the stem.
5. Apply gold leafing adhesive to the leaf area of the fruit and apply gold or composite leafing to the area, using a soft brush to press the leafing into any depressions (figure C).
6. Apply small sections of gold or composite leafing to the body of the fruit if desired.
