Project designed by Michele Gerbrandt.
Materials:
two copies of same photo
metal ruler
craft knife
photo-safe wax pencil
removable artist's tape
photo-safe tape or adhesive
photo cleaning cloth
Steps:
1. Using a ruler and a photo-safe wax pencil, press lightly to draw vertical lines 1/2 inch apart across the first photo. Number the back of each section in consecutive order to make reassembly easier. Repeat this step on the second photo drawing, horizontal lines 1/2 inch apart down the photo. Letter the back of each strip in consecutive order to make reassembly easier (figure A).
2. Using a metal ruler and a craft knife, slice the strips apart on each photo. Keep the strips from each photo in order and separate (figure B).
3. Pick two center vertical strips from the first photo and two center horizontal strips from the second photo. Weave the strips together, matching the photo features. As you weave each piece, secure the pieces in place with a temporary adhesive so they don't shift. Add a new strip each time you complete one weave (alternating vertical and horizontal strips), using an equal number of strips from both photos (figure C).
4. When all strips are woven together to complete the reassembly of the two photos, use permanent, photo-safe tape or a sheet of photo-safe adhesive on the back of the photos. Trim if needed and mount as desired. Remove the artist's tape from the front of photos and wipe all fingerprints with an optical cleaning cloth or lint-free gloves (figure D).
