Quilt artist Joanie San Chirico visits with host Alex Anderson to demonstrate how to make an adoption quilt for an international child. See fabrics from many lands, and learn how to make a photo transfer greeting card to welcome an adopted child.
Materials:
card design
rotary cutter
cutting mat
ruler
scissors
high-count fabric
photo transfer paper
fusible web interfacing
iron
decorative accessories such as frog, button or trim
Steps:
1. Design a card and transfer the card onto fabric and trim the fabric 1 inch around the card perimeter.
2. Fuse the interfacing to the back side of the card lining. Trim the lining to the size of the card.
3. Place the card front and lining right sides together. Sew along the top, right and bottom edges. Trim the corners off the edges, and turn the fabric right side out. Note: Be careful if pressing the fabric with an iron as some photo transfers may be destroyed by heat.
4. Measure and cut four border strips about 2-1/4 inches wide. Sew the border strips to the top, right and bottom edges of the inside card piece.
5. Place the left border right sides together on the top of the card where the photo transfer ends.
6. Stack the inside card and the top card section with the border, and sew together down the left side. Press the fabric open.
7. Close the card with a frog closure or other decorative accessory.
