Figure C
Therese May demonstrates how to immortalize a person through portrait quilting.

Materials:

fabrics
coordinating thread
muslin
stabilizer
fusible webbing
scissors
paper
pencil
iron
embellishments: buttons, fabric paint

Steps:

1. Sketch a person's face on a piece of paper.

2. Number the shapes on the sketch (figure A) and make copies of the pattern.

3. Iron on fusible webbing to the back of the fabrics. Remove the fusible backing and pin in place to the pattern.

4. Use the scissors to cut out the pattern components. Note: The number of components determines the number of fabrics needed for the project. Each shape is a different fabric in the pattern (figure B).

5. Place the pieces of fabric on the muslin foundation in order. Place the pressing cloth on top of the fabrics and iron the block to fuse the pieces in place.

6. Position the block on a piece of stabilizer and use a satin stitch to quilt the components together. Use different embellishments for the facial features such as button eyes (figure C) and fabric paint for the mouth.
