Beading and Embellishment
General Instructions
Beading and embellishments are optional. Add special touches to the quilt by incorporating your own ideas. Space #11 seed beads 3/8" apart unless otherwise noted. Bury all needlework in batting—do not sew through quilt.

Materials:

#6 beads: 2 tubes (250) pink, 5 tubes (740) red
green 9mm twisted bugle beads: 20
two 1" treble clef charms in pewter
1/2 yard beaded fringe on red ribbon
1 strand orange tigereye 4mm beads (57)
12-15 assorted silk flowers, 6-8 assorted silk leaves, seed beads to match
1 tube of each color #11 seed beads - dark green, green, yellow, red,
orange, blue, pink, purple
beading thread and needles

Steps:

Block 1: Bead along swirl pattern in redbud tree with #6 pink beads spaced 3/8" apart. Bead with #11 seed beads: ground line with dark green; redbud arc with green; window with yellow; cabin top, angled edges, and front with red; each side of chimney and lower edge of orange roof stripes with orange.

Block 2: Bead with #11 seed beads: blue arc with blue; red arc with red; yellow arc with yellow; both sides of orange arc with orange; upper triangle on lamp with orange; arc of lamp and rays with yellow.

Block 3: Bead with #11 seed beads: checkerboard intersections with one blue bead each; unembroidered edge of swirls and inner edge of arc with pink.

Block 4: Accent cactus with 10 pairs of green twisted bugle beads for spines. Bead with #11 seed beads: inner edge of arc and ell with orange; outer arc and ell with yellow; hand with pink spaced at 1/8" intervals; cactus flowers with densely spaced red.

Block 5: Attach treble clef charms to windows. Bead with #11 seed beads: purple arc with purple; green arc, scalloped arc, and scallop intersections with green; roof and front edges in orange; top window edges in blue; leaf tips with red.

Block 6: Bead with #11 seed beads: edge of blue swirl and blue arc with blue; dark half of trees and green edge with dark green; light half of trees with green; yellow arc with yellow. Add one seed bead to the center of each lazy daisy flower in yellow or orange.

Block 7: Bead with #11 seed beads: yellow green arc with green; purple arc with purple; blue arc and circles with blue; pink zigzag with pink; orange arc and tips
with orange.

Block 8: Bead with #11 seed beads: all building edges and windows with blue. Stitch beaded fringe to arc edge. Bead with #11 seed beads: top ornament edge with orange; center ornament with yellow; lower ornament edge with orange, arc ribbon edge with red.

Block 9: Bead with #11 seed beads: light turquoise sashing edges in blue; lower and outer palm edges with green; star pattern inside starfish with yellow.

Block 10: Bead with #11 seed beads: yellow arc areas with yellow on all sides; arc ribs with orange; outer arc edge with blue; green architecture edges, embroidery tips, and dome with green; ornaments with red.

Block 11: Bead with #11 seed beads: door with red; window with yellow. Baste strand of orange 4mm beads to edge of hat. Secure by alternating each 6mm bead with a #11 seed bead. When finished, run a final stabilizing thread through all beads on hat edge (see beading diagram 1). Arrange silk flowers and leaves along hatband. Stitch leaves in place; secure each flower through center with a cluster of seed beads (see beading diagram 2). Vary colors and sizes as desired.

Block 12: Bead with #11 seed beads: lily pad edge with blue; pink arc and inner pink petals with red; yellow arc with yellow.

Border: Bead with #11 seed beads: yellow orange piping and appliqué with yellow. Bead with #6 red beads: border scallops and corner.
