Crafters Barbara Burnett and Jean Kievlan offer advice for getting the most out of rented space at a craft mall. This set-up is where someone else owns the building, puts in booths, and rents space to crafters. Here's what to investigate:
- Look for a well-lit, well-kept location that has abundant walk-by traffic and plenty of parking.
- Choose a craft that will appeal to the tastes of people in the vending area.
- Keep up with trends and contemporary colors by visiting department stores and looking through catalogs. Set your area up in a similar fashion.
- Test-market all products before making them available to the general public.
- Select malls that contain a good "anchor" business or grocery store.
- If you desire a lot of walk-by traffic, locate a mall with a restaurant nearby.
- Set a goal to accrue ten times your booth fee.
- Always be certain that you have plenty of stock.
- Check in craft publications for craft mall listings.
- If you will be selling from a distance, arrange and photograph your desired display in advance, and send the picture to the exhibit managers at the mall. This will allow them to design the booth according to your specifications.
- Determine an appropriate booth size. The range is usually 2 feet by 2 feet, up to 8 feet by ten feet.
