When it comes to quilt making, following the rules is usually a good way to end up with a perfect quilt. However, one quilter tends to "bend" those rules for spectacular results. Award-winning quilter Sharon Norbutas has mastered a technique that creates movement and depth in her quilts. This very tedious and time-consuming technique of bending bias is achieved by paper piecing.
Pushing the limits of this technique has earned Norbutas a designation of Masterpiece Quilt from the National Quilt Association. The award-winning quilt, known as Window in the Wall, started with a centerpiece and grew in circles. Having no particular plan, Norbutas concentrated on the movement of color and making seam lines less obvious. The particular quilt took two years to complete--one year for construction and one year to quilt. What is the Norbutas secret to award-winning quilts? She'll chuckle and tell you it was just plain luck. "It's been very satisfying and a great deal of fun for me," she says.
