Mix ultrasuede scraps with denim to create exciting effects on a denim jacket. Use preshrunk 12- or 14-ounce weight denim for this project.
Materials:
fusible webbing
denim jacket or denim fabric and jacket pattern
ultrasuede
Steps:
- Place fusible web on the wrong side of the ultrasuede and iron it on. Don't use any steam.
- Find the center of the denim by folding it in half, then folding it in half one more time so that it's quartered. Press the denim to get a crease.
- Follow a denim jacket pattern to create the body of the jacket. Be patient - a denim jacket can take up to 40 hours to sew, but once you've finished, it will be a reward!
- Cut a 4 inch square of ultrasuede and clip it into two equal triangles from corner to corner. Repeat with another 4 inch square clipped into two triangles. Leave the triangles as they are, or trim the edges for additional designs.
- Stitch the triangles together to create a pattern across the jacket.
- Topstitch the ultrasuede using a stretch needle. (If you are constructing the entire jacket, use a denim needle.)
- If adding multiple layers of ultrasuede, fuse the first layer, then topstitch. Fuse another layer and topstitch. Change threads for each layer to give it a 3-D effect.
- If piecing the ultrasuede and denim together, match wrong sides of the fabric together and sew. Add other pieces to the garment and sew again, wrong sides together.
Tip: Try various suedes, such as sueded microfiber, for a cheaper alternative to ultrasuede.
