Project designed by Sheila Haynes Rauen.
Materials:
Option One
clear glass vase
Etchall etching creme
applicator bottle and tip
rubber stamp for design motif - Choose a simple design that's easy to trace.
Option Two
clear glass vase
Etchall resist gel
applicator bottle and tip
Etchall Dip 'n Etch liquid
plastic container slightly larger than the vase to hold etching liquid
rubber stamp for design motif - Choose a simple design that's easy to trace.
Steps:
Option One - Positive Image
- Wash and dry glass to remove dirt or oils.
- Stamp the design onto a piece of paper to make a pattern. Stamp several images if desired. Cut and tape image(s) into the desired position on the inside of the vase.
- Stir the Etchall etching creme and pour it into the applicator bottle with the applicator tip in place.
- Trace the design onto the glass with the etching creme. After drawing all of the designs on the glass, allow to etch for 15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly under running water until creme is removed. Wash and dry, then it's ready for use.
Option Two - Negative Image - To determine how much Etchall liquid is needed to etch the body of the vase, place vase into the plastic container, then hold vase while filling the container with water. Add water until it covers the body of the vase.
- Remove vase from container and mark water level on the side using tape or a permanent marker.
- Wash and dry vase.
- Stamp the design onto a piece of paper to make a pattern. Stamp several images if desired. Cut out image(s) tape into the desired position on the inside of the vase.
- Draw design onto glass with resist gel. The gel will appear green but will become clear in color as it dries.
- After applying all the design motifs, allow the resist to dry thoroughly. Pour the Dip 'n Etch liquid into the plastic container until it reaches the waterline mark. Note: Either fill the vase with water before placing it in the Dip 'n Etch or use a heavy object to keep it submerged in the liquid during the etching process. Allow 15 minutes for the etching process. Remove the vase and rinse well under running water. The resist will wash away to reveal the clear, shiny designs. Wash and dry before using. The Dip 'n Etch can be reused. Pour it back into the original container to store for additional projects.
Important Tips:
- Select option one if you want the design to be etched and the rest of the vase surface to remain clear. Select option two if you want the design to be clear and the vase surface to be etched.
- Do not work on a ceramic tile surface or use a ceramic sink for the rinsing process. Ceramic surfaces will etch if any etching creme or liquid comes in contact with them.
- Painted glass will not etch.
- Pyrex glass will not etch.
- Etched glass pieces are dishwasher safe.
