Vicki Payne, host of the PBS series Stained Glass with Vicki Payne, demonstrates a simple way to transform any glass light fixture into a beautiful Tiffany-style lamp. She presents the step-by-step process for covering an ordinary glass lamp shade with a glass mosaic pattern, and then transfers this technique to another clear shade.
Materials:
etched glass shade/dome as a base for the mosaic lamp*
mosaic glass glue
black mosaic glass grout
mosaic grout sealer
assortment of colorful art glass
hardware assembly for hanging or displaying shade
Stick & Stay adhesive
mosaic glass cutter
general glass cutting equipment
safety glasses
* Glass grout, available in craft shops, home improvement centers and through glass retailers, must be used. Do not use tile grout.
Steps:
- Select or purchase a glass dome or shade to be decorated with mosaics. These are often available from retailers of stained glass.
- Create a design on paper, and make several copies of the design. Cut the shapes apart, and, using the adhesive, arrange the pattern of the pieces on the inside of the glass dome.
- Cut the pieces of glass using a mosaic cutter or a standard glass cutter. Keep the pieces small.
- Apply the mosaic glass glue to a small section at a time, and arrange your glass pieces.
- Mix the grout according to the instructions on the package.
- Use a small brush to apply the grout to the shade. Hold the shade up to the light, and make sure you have filled all of the gaps between the mosaic pieces.
- With a damp sponge, clean off the excess grout from the shade.
- After the grout has dried, apply the mosaic sealer.
Note: Since the dome is the base for constructing the lamp shade, so you will need a new dome for each lamp you make.
