Figure J
Designed by Emi Fukushima.

Materials:

Japanese kozo paper
triangular wooden box
3 wooden ball knobs for feet
Beacon's liquid laminate
Chinese coins and charms
black, white & anthrocite Fimo Clay
rubber stamp
gold, black & burnt umber acrylic paint
Modern Options patina solution
tassel
paint brush
eye screw and jump ring
bamboo
moss
wet/dry sandpaper
26-gauge wire
glue
craft knife

Steps:

1. Sand the wooden box until smooth.

2. Paint the inside of the box with gold acrylic paint. Paint the feet of the box with black acrylic paint.

3. Cut the kozo paper to cover all sides of the box, including the bottom.

4. With a brush, apply liquid laminate over the wooden box.

5. Lay the Japanese kozo paper over the box and smooth out air bubbles (figure A).

6. Apply another coat of liquid laminate over the paper and box. Let it dry.

7. Rub burnt umber acrylic paint over entire box with a wet paper towel, leaving some surfaces lighter (figure B).

8. Apply more paint to the edges of the box to make it darker and to give the box an antique look.

9. Using a craft knife, cut through the paper so the box lid will open (figure C).

10. To make the clay embellishment: Soften white Fimo soft clay with your hands. Roll it flat to about 1/4-inch thick.

11. Press rubber stamp image into the clay. Soften black clay and tear the edges (figure D).

12. Bake both pieces in the oven at 265 F degrees for 30 to 45 minutes.

13. Apply burnt umber paint to stamped image piece, rub off, and add more to edges as you did above for an antique look (figure E).

14. Sand and buff stamped piece (figure F).

15. Glue the rubber stamped clay onto to the black clay.

16. To make the teapot: Condition a small amount of anthrocite-colored Fimo clay. Form a small ball (about an inch in diameter) for the body of the teapot (figure G).

17. Form the spout with a small amount of clay. Tie a piece of wire around a small piece of bamboo at both ends to make the handle. Insert the wire ends into the teapot (figure H).

18. Bake in oven at 265 F degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. When it is cool, apply patina solution (figure I).

19. To assemble the box: Fix the teapot to the top of the lid with glue. Do the same with the rubber-stamped embellishment.

20. To the sides of the box, glue the charms, coins, bamboo and moss on all sides (figure J).

21. Add a tassel to the lid using the eye screw and jump ring.
