Project by Lacey Oldham. This project is a wonderful way to use up small scraps of material, ribbon, or trims. It's also a very fun project for kids to do at a birthday party or to give out as party favors.
Materials:
clear 35mm film canisters*
assorted ribbons of varying widths
assorted trims: buttons, ribbon roses, rhinestones, flowers
glue gun
glue sticks
*or clear coin tubes used by coin collectors available in various sizes
Steps:
1. Measure a wide piece of ribbon around the outside of the film canister and leave enough to fold the end under so you dont have any raw edges. Glue in place (figure A).
2. Glue a second ribbon on top of the first one in the middle.
3. Make a bow or glue a purchased bow on the front of the canister (figure B).
4. Glue any decoration you wish on top of the bow (figure C).
5. Glue the same decoration on top of the canister lid that you glued on the front of the mini kit. Or, to make a necklace, drill a small hole in the center of the lid and place the shank of a button up through the hole (so that the shank sticks out the top of the lid) (figure D) and tie a long ribbon to it.
6. Fill with small adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, cotton swabs cut in half, and a small piece of gauze.
Alternatives:
To use as an earring holder, cut a small piece of plastic canvas to fit in the canister and put your earrings through the holes.
To use as a sewing kit, fill with safety pins, needles, thread on a piece of cardboard, buttons, and a small thimble.
To use as a hair kit, fill with small bobby pins, elastic hair ties, and small hair clips.
To use as an office supply kit. fill with paper clips, rubber bands, an eraser.
To use as a bracelet-building kit. fill with stretch elastic on a piece of cardboard, beads of assorted sizes, and a few crimp beads.
Fill with coins for laundry, lunch money, or your favorite small candies.
