Swirly Shell

Materials:

selected garment
Marvy Uchida extra jumbo spiral punch
scissors
freezer paper
iron
Jacquard Products Neopaque black fabric paint
stencil brush
cardboard

Steps:

1. Pre-wash and dry the garment you are planning to embellish. Protect your clothes and your work surface.

2. Cut freezer paper into squares larger than the spiral punch.

3. Create stencils by punching spirals from the center of each square of freezer paper.

4. Iron stencils to garment with the shiny side of the freezer paper down. Make sure that the edges are well adhered (figure A).

5. Insert cardboard between the front and back of the garment to prevent paint from bleeding through.

6. Paint inside the spirals black (figure B). Work with a fairly dry brush to avoid over-wetting the freezer paper. If the paper gets too wet it may lift, allowing paint to seep underneath.

7. Remove the freezer paper stencils and allow the garment to dry for at least 24 hours before heat-setting the paint according to the manufacturer's instructions (figure C).

selected garment
Marvy Uchida leaf punches
freezer paper
iron
Jacquard Products Lumiere gold & metallic olive green fabric paints
masking tape
paintbrushes
cardboard

Steps:

1. Pre-wash and dry selected garment. Protect your clothes and your work surface.

2. Use strips of masking tape to mark off the area to be painted.

3. Punch several leaf shapes from freezer paper. Iron punched shapes to garment shiny side down. Be sure all edges are adhered well (figure D).

4. Insert cardboard between front and back of garment before applying paint. Using gold and olive paint, paint in the chosen area (figure E). Work with fairly dry brushes and avoid saturating the area as this can cause freezer paper to lift and allow paint to seep underneath.

5. When paint dries completely, remove masking tape and freezer paper shapes.

6. Wait at least 24 hours before heat-setting according to the manufacturer's instructions for the paint.
