2 skeins #319 Off White
1 skein #410 Christmas Green
1 skein #406 Christmas Red
Knitting needles, #8, or size required to knit to gauge
Crochet hook, size G.
Stitch holder
Large-eye yarn needle for embroidery
Gauge: 9 sts = 2" (Stockinette Stitch on #8 needles).
Notes: Wind several balls each of Christmas Green and Off White; when working checks, use a separate ball for each section of color. Do not carry unused colors across; rather, drop unused color to wrong side of work and pick up when again needed on return row. When changing colors, always bring up new color from under dropped color to prevent holes.
Beg at top with Christmas Red, cast on 62 sts.
Rows 1 through 4: K each row.
Row 5 (Right Side): K 6 Christmas Green, * k 5 Off White, k 5 Christmas Green; repeat from * across, end k 6 Off White.
Row 6: P 6 White, * p 5 Green, p 5 White; repeat from *across, end p 6 Green.
Rows 7 through 11: Keeping to color pattern as established, work in Stockinette Stitch (k on right side, p on wrong side)-first panel of checks completed.
Row 12: Continuing in Stockinette Stitch, p 6 White, * p 5 Green, p 5 White; repeat from * across, end p 6 Green.
Rows 13 through 18: Working in Stockinette Stitch, continue check pattern as established. At end of last row, discontinue Green.
Rows 19 through 54: With White, work in Stockinette Stitch, ending in p row.
Row 55(Dec Row): K 1, k 2 tog, k to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1-1 st dec each edge.
Rows 56 through 64: Work Stockinette Stitch. Repeat Rows 55 through 64 until 54 sts remain.
Next Row: Dec 1 st, work across as established-53 sts. Work as established until 14" from beg, end with p row.
Divide for Heel: Sl 13 sts to stitch holder for right-hand half of heel; sl next 27 sts to another holder for instep; sl remaining 13 sts to free needle for left half of heel.
Left Half of Heel: Row 1: With Christmas Red, p 13.
Row 2: Sl 1, k 12.
Rows 3 through 18: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 19 (Turn Heel; Short Rows): P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn.
Next Row: Sl 1, k 3, turn.
Next Row: P 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn.
Next Row: Sl 1, k 4, turn.

Toe: Row 1 (Right Side): Join Red and k 9, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 18, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 9-44 sts.
Row 2 and All Even-Numbered Rows: Purl.
Row 3: K 8, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 16, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 8-40 sts. Working in the same manner, continue to dec 4 sts every k row until 16 sts remain, end on right side. From wrong side, sl first 4 sts to holder, sl next 8 sts to free needle, sl remaining 4 sts to second holder. From k side, beg with 4th st, sl 4 sts from first holder to 2nd needle, k 4 sts from 2nd holder to same needle so that side edges are at center of needle. Turn and have points of both needles at right-hand edge. Cut yarn leaving 14" end for weaving.
Weaving Toe: Thread 14" end in large-eye yarn needle and weave sts together as follows: * Pass yarn needle through first st of front knitting needle as to k and sl st off needle, pass needle through 2nd st on front needle as to p and leave st on needle; pass first st on back needle as to p and slip off needle, pass through 2nd st on back needle as to k and leave on needle; repeat from * until all sts are joined. Work end in and fasten securely.
Leaves:
Make 2. With #8 needles and Christmas Green, cast on 7 sts.
Row 1: K 3, yo, k 1, yo, k 3.
Row 2 and All Even-Numbered Rows: Purl.
Row 3: K 4, yo, k 1, yo, k 4.
Row 5: K 5, yo, k 1, yo, k 5.
Row 7: Bind off 3 sts, k 2, yo, k 1, yo, k 6.
Row 8: Bind off 3 sts, p 8.
Row 9: Repeat Row 3.
Row 11: Repeat Row 5.
Row 13: Repeat Row 7.
Row 14: Repeat Row 8.
Row 15: Repeat Row 3.
Row 17: Repeat Row 5.
Row 19: Bind off 3 sts, k 9.
Row 20: Bind off 3 sts, p 6.
Row 21: K 2 tog, k 3, k 2 tog.
Row 23: K 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog.
Row 25: Sl 1, k 2 tog, psso.
Berries:
Make 4. With #8 needles and Christmas Red, cast on 1 st. K into front and back of st until there are 5 sts on needle.
Beg with k row, work in Stockinette Stitch on 5 sts for 5 rows.
Next Row: Pass 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sts over first st. Tie off.
Finishing:
Sew leaves to area of stocking below check pattern. Using large-eye yarn needle and 1 strand green, embroider straight stitch or outline stitch for stem. Sew berries in place around leaves.
Hanger:
With crochet hook and Red, make a ch 4" long. Fold in half and sew to back of stocking.
