Kitty Bartholomew shares how Lorrie Webb and her designer, Kenneth Brown, remodeled the area under her house immediately so she could live and work there while the major remodeling was being completed on the rest of the home.

  • Inexpensive OSB (oriented strand board) was used to create a desk, shelves and doors (figure A). A piece of copper laminate applied to the front side under the desktop adds another textural element.
  • Brown used bamboo for the floors because it costs less than regular hardwood and is better for the environment since it replenishes itself every three years.
  • A barn door grants access to the space (figure B).
  • Next to the office is an odd-shaped space that was turned into a gym (figure C). The concrete retaining wall was left exposed for textural interest. Wall-to-wall mirrors make the space feel larger than it is. Cork tiles cover the floor.
  • The gym leads into the master bedroom, which is a simple, clutter-free space (figure D). The concrete retaining wall behind the bed was also left exposed and a lighting channel was installed above the bed to add a soft glow.
