Materials:
14" terra-cotta flowerpot saucer
4" rose flowerpot
4-1/2" x 13" flowerpot
frog and lily pad drawings
carbon paper
4" x 6" plastic tub
submersible water pump
10" plastic tubing to fit pump
power drill with masonry drill bit
1 lb. terra-cotta mosaic grout (discontinued)
4 oz. Vic's mosaic glass glue
Vic's mosaic sealer
Stick & Stay adhesive
Spectrum opalescent art glass (discontinued) - 1/4 square ft. of each color:
- light blue, dark blue, medium blue, dark green, red, yellow, orange, lime green
Spectrum opalescent art glass (discontinued) - 1/2 square ft. of white
Steps:
- Prepare flowerpots and saucer to accommodate the pump setup. Be certain the diameter of the hole in the bottom of the top flowerpot covering the pump hose is large enough to accommodate the hose. If the hole is not large enough, use a masonry drill or file to enlarge it.
- Drill a one-inch hole in the bottom of the saucer. The fountain will need a space for the pump hose and a little extra space for the water to drain back into the water reservoir that contains the submersible pump.
- Cut a one-inch notch in the top rim of the base pot to accommodate the pump cord. It may be necessary to notch the edge of the plastic tub as well. Use Stick & Stay to adjust the flow of water back to the pump.
- Using carbon paper, transfer the frog and lily pad designs to the surface of the saucer and flowerpot. Outline the design with a permanent marking black felt tip pen.
- Hand-cut the mosaic glass pieces. Use glass grinders to help shape the pieces.
- Coat the flowerpot and saucer surfaces with a thin coat of mosaic glue and let dry for a few minutes. Apply more glue and begin positioning the small mosaic pieces to fit the design. Cover the inside of the saucer and the outside of the flowerpot with mosaic pieces. Let dry for 24 hours.
- Use terra-cotta mosaic tile grout to fill in all small gaps between the mosaic pieces. Clean up excess grout and let dry for 48 hours. Seal and protect the fountain with three coats of mosaic grout sealer.
- Once grout and sealer have completely dried, start assembling fountain. It is important that all parts of the fountain are completely dry during the assembly stage. Use Stick & Stay to help secure everything together.
- Fill the bucket with water and feed the pump hose up through the bottom of the saucer and through the top flowerpot. Place in garden.
