Artist Sherry Robinson updates a black, '60s-style metal fireplace hood with a faux-bronze finish. When following the simple steps below, caution should be taken to work in a well-ventilated area. Always use a mask and protective gloves when handling Xylene, a very strong solvent. High-heat paint, available at a fireplace store, must be used for this project.
- Clean the metal hood by sanding it with a light-grit paper.
- Wipe down the entire surface with Xylene solvent and a soft cloth. (Be sure to follow safety precautions.)
- Paint a base coat of high-heat paint. Let it dry completely.
- Make a glazing mixture by combining 1/2 cup Xylene with 1/2 teaspoon bronzing powder, available at paint stores. Mix well with a paintbrush (figure A).
- Add about 1/2 teaspoon high-heat paint to the glaze and mix thoroughly with the paintbrush. It is important to mix the Xylene and bronzing powder first, and only then add the paint. Make sure no clumps remain.
- Using rubber gloves, apply the glaze with a tight-weave sponge (figure B). Apply in daubs with a nearly dry sponge to avoid any running of the glaze.
