If you need to make sure that something is perfectly vertical, you need to use a plumb bob (figure A). A plum bob is basically a calibrated weight with a point at the end attached to a piece of line. Plum bobs are used for aligning doorways or other projects where you need to make sure the surface is straight up and down.

For checking a doorway, hand the plumb bob a few inches from the edge of the doorway. Measure the distance at the top of the doorway (figure B) and check it again at the bottom (figure C). A plumb bob is also a good tool to use when you need to locate a point directly below given point.
