Don't panic over minor nicks and scratches in furniture. There are tools and techniques to get rid of minor damage with resulting to a complete refinishing of the piece.

A blend and fill stick is one inexpensive alternative. Just match the color as closely as you can and apply it directly to the scratch. Work it back and forth to fill the scratch (figure A). Allow to dry for a second and come back and wipe away the excess with a clean cloth.

A stain marker is essentially the same thing as the fill stick, only in liquid form. Shake the tube well, hold it over the area that needs repairing and press down (figure B). Go over the entire area, let it dry for about 10 seconds then wipe away the excess.

Wood filler is good for deep gouges, nail holes and large depressions. Pack the filler into damaged areas using a putty knife. Press hard to get good coverage, then immediately wipe away the excess. Once the filler dries, sand the repair down, stain and refinish the area.
