Toolbox: Air Compressors

Though not a tool you might use every day, an air compressor is a handy device to have around the house or shop. Compact units are available for less than $100 (figure A) and can be used to maintain pressure in your car's tires or, with attachments, as an airbrush for fine painting and detail.

Larger units with storage tanks (figure B) can power a variety of tools. They're more expensive but you can rent the compressor and attachments. A larger compressor can be used with paint sprayers; nail guns, drills and sanders. Air tools are especially convenient to work with because they are powerful, smooth and since they have fewer moving parts are nearly vibration free.
