When Gene Leber and his wife Connie went shopping for a home, they needed something to meet Genes special needs. When they couldnt find it, they decided to design and build their own home on a pond outside Dayton, Ohio. Architect Kevin Carroll says the result is a two-story contemporary home that features some of the most innovative concepts in universal design.
From the impressive entry to the wide hallways to the smooth transitions from hard surfaces to carpeted areas, the house gives Gene, who uses a wheelchair, the access and independence that he desires. Automatic doors allow him to travel from room to room with ease. Elevators at each end of the house allow him to visit his teenage children or work in the couples upstairs home office. Custom-design cabinetry in the kitchen and the bedrooms put everything within Genes reach. And, smart home technology allows Gene to run the homes mechanics from a bedside table.
Outside, theres an outdoor pavilion that gives Gene access to the pond for swimming, boating and fishing. Builder Kent Myers says he was so excited about doing this project he completed it six months ahead of schedule. Learn how the team seized the opportunity to make universal design fresh, fun and contemporary.
