If you have an area in your yard that you would like to showcase, or if you simply have an unsightly worn area in your lawn, you might want to install a stone walkway .
Equipment list:
Shovel
Sand
Garden hose
Flat stones
- Lay out the walkway area. You may want to use pieces of cardboard to help you experiment with the placement of the stones.
- Begin setting the stones. Walk through the design to make sure the placement seems natural and easy to walk through (figure A).
- Use a shovel to cut out the sod and soil from beneath the stones. Dig out enough soil that the stones can lie flush with the ground (figure B). You may need to pour a layer of sand in the bottom of the hole to keep the stone from wobbling .
* Save the sod; you can use it to fill bare areas in your yard.
- After you place the stones, backfill around them with soil and sand (figure C). Then spray the stones down with a garden hose. In addition to cleaning the stones, this will also help the soil and sand to settle well.
