If you have an area in your yard that you would like to showcase, or if you simply have an unsightly worn area in your lawn, you might want to install a pea gravel walkway.

Equipment list:
Landscape fabric
Pea gravel
Pressure-treated lumber (1"x4" and 1"x2")
Circular saw
Drill
Shovel
  1. Lay out the area for the walkway. Use a trail of sand or chalk to mark the sides (figure A). The walkway should be at least 3' wide for people walking single file or 5' wide for people walking side by side.
  2. Remove the sod and soil from the marked areas to make a shallow trench.
  3. Cut the 1"X2" lumber into 10" stakes and drive them along the trench to provide support for the side pieces.
  4. Make "kerf cuts," across the 1"X4" lumber. Kerf cuts allow the boards to bend more easily. They should be approximately 1/4" deep and about 2" or 3" apart (figure B).
  5. Bend the boards around the stakes (figure C) and secure them with galvanized screws.
  6. Lay landscape fabric between the boards (figure D). You may want to stake the fabric down, but the weight of the gravel should hold it in place.
  7. Pour a 3" layer of pea gravel on top of the fabric (figure E).
* To save time and effort, you may want to have the pea gravel delivered. If you provide the measurements of your walkway to the supplier, they should be able to deliver the appropriate amount of gravel.
