Host Kathi Cardinalli explains how to fashion a terrific garden table from a large piece of crab-orchard stone and a metal base (figure A, below).

Materials:

slab of stone
piece of metal pipe that has threads at each end
metal pipefittings, both elbow and T-joints
metal flanges
self-sticking plastic pads
foam brush
sealer

Steps:

  1. Assemble your table with metal pieces and pipefittings (figure B).

  2. Attach flanges to each of the four legs to make feet for the table.

  • For strength, use a piece of pipe for a crossbar (figure D) between the legs on each side. To attach this piece of metal, screw the pipe in clockwise all the way on the T-joint on one leg, then screw it in counterclockwise in the T-joint on the other leg. This allows the piece to be screwed in halfway on each side.

  • Stand the table up and work with it until it is level (figure E).

  • Place plastic pads on each corner at the top (figure F) so the stone can rest on them.

  • To make the stone stainproof, seal it by brushing on some sealer. Two coats may be necessary.
