Cover your AC unit with attractive latticework.
Problem: Air conditioning units can be unattractive.

Solution: You can build a latticework cover for your outside air conditioning unit.
  • Lattice is available in several patterns, sizes and materials. It can be painted or stained, and it allows air to circulate around your air conditioning unit.

Equipment list:
Powered miter saw or miter box
Circular saw
Measuring tape
Pencil
2-1/2" and 1-5/8" exterior screws
Drill, with drill bits and screwdriver bits
Safety goggles
Materials will include lattice and pre-grooved 2"X2" boards for the frame

  1. Measure the size of the lattice panels you will need and mark them accordingly. Keep in mind that the box will need to provide at least 3" clearance on top of the unit and 2" on each side. It's okay for your box to be too large, but you can damage your system if the box is too small.
  2. Using a 2"X2" board as a straight edge, draw cutting lines across the panels. Be sure you don't draw lines across staples. Mark lines for four panels (three side pieces and one top piece).
  3. Cut along the lines with a circular saw.
  4. Cut a frame for each panel. Use the miter box to cut 45-degree angles on the ends of the 2"X2" boards. When measuring the lengths for your frame boards, keep in mind that the lattice panels will fit inside the grooves, and compensate accordingly.
  5. Begin assembling the panels, which fit together like a picture frame. Dry-fit the frame together and then mark the spots where you intend to screw the corners together. Pre-drill the screw holes, clamp the boards together and secure them with screws. Repeat the process for each corner of the panel.
  6. After all the panels are assembled, begin assembling the box. Start by positioning the side panels together and pre-drilling holes for the 2-1/2" screws. Make sure all the corners are flush, and drive in the screws. After you assemble the three side pieces, attach the top piece so that it is flush with the edges of the side pieces. This will give a more finished look to the box.
