Notebook: Furnace Replacement

House Detective : Episode HDT-502 -- More Projects »
The homeowner in Syracuse will have to purchase a new furnace, one of the most expensive appliances in a home. And because of safety concerns and energy efficiency, making the right choice is very important.

The first detail is size. Was the previous unit sufficient? Was it powerful enough to adequately heat the home? Figuring that out can be complicated. Hire a heating contractor to do the calculations. Next is furnace efficiency, a measurement of energy produced and lost during the heating process. An efficient furnace means lower heating bills.

In cold climates, it makes sense to invest in the highest efficiency unit you can buy. In milder climates a unit with 80 percent efficiency should do the trick. Energy efficiency rates are posted on the unit. Buy a system with a good warranty from a reputable company. And have the system checked by a professional once a year to ensure it’s operating safely and to maximum efficiency.

The good news is you shouldn’t have to purchase a furnace too often. A new one should last 20 to 25 years.
