Figure A
Interior designer Anne McKevitt explains how to turn a door into a unique new dining table or even a desk--for just $20.

Initial Tips

  • It can easily be stored under the bed when not in use.

  • Set it on a couple of sawhorses, and it makes a great dining table (figure A).

  • Position across two file cabinets and it becomes a unique desktop. All you need is latex paint, acetone, sponges and masking tape.

  • When creating designs, make sure to keep shapes simple.

  • To "stamp" designs onto the door, use acetone. This allows you to erase the design with water if you make a mistake before transferring it to the table.

Creating the Table

Materials:

old door
several colors of paint
paintbrushes
acetone

Steps:

  1. Paint the desired shape on the acetone (figure B).

  2. Add texture by stippling the paint, then etching a design with the handle end of the paintbrush (figure C).

  3. Press the acetone to the table in the desired location, paint side down. Press firmly across the entire design, to transfer the paint to the table. Pull the acetone off.

Figure D
  • Paint the edges of the table to hide the factory applied writing and add a finished look with color. Be sure to mask off the top of the table (figure D) to create a sharp edge and keep paint off the top. Press down on the tape firmly to avoid seepage.

    Figure E
  • Turn the table over and decorate the other side, if desired. Use masking tape to create geometric designs (figure E).

  • This technique looks best using at least three colors. Cut sponges in half so you have one for each color.

  • Pour paint onto paper plate and sponge on color.

  • When the paint has dried pull off tape and finish with several coats of varnish.
