Figure C
Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates an easy way to make a collectibles shelf--by using a window box.

Materials:

window box
belt or strap clamp
white primer
scrap board
mirror
china marker
semigloss enamel paint
scoring tool
"T" ruler
household oil
safety goggles
molding
paintbrush
hot-glue gun for wood

Steps:

  1. Square up the window box with a belt or strap clamp (figure A).

  2. Paint with a primer coat.

  3. Measure scrap board to a specific measurement, then use the board to measure the inside of the box for the mirror. Trace onto the mirror with a china marker.

  4. Dip a scoring tool into household oil and use it to cut the mirror to fit inside the box (figure B). Secure the mirror and make a straight cut with a "T" ruler. Always wear safety goggles when cutting glass.

  5. Break the glass by using gentle pressure, with the scored edge around a 1/4-inch out from the edge of the table (figure C).

  6. Paint the box.

  7. Cut molding to fit edges of box. Use a dry brush to apply a little paint onto the molding. Let dry.

  8. Attach molding to the edges of the box with wood glue.

  9. Use glue to attach the mirror to the box. Let dry.
