Chinese Pagodas don't usually come to mind when you think of desert architecture. But for homeowner Nancy Bissell, they did. She and her former husband decided to design and build one in her own backyard. The ancient Chinese structure was adapted to the desert climate and landscape. For example, the pagoda was screened-in to keep the mosquitoes out during the monsoon-season rains, and the snakes out during the hot Tucson summers. Plus, the pagoda needed to be durable, yet maintenance free. So Bissell chose an iron hexagonal base with a corrugated metal roof and concrete floors .
