Just five miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, DeSilva Island has drawn attention from more than a few developers over the years. The quiet and secluded location is coveted for its location just minutes from downtown San Francisco. But environmental challenges make building on DeSilva Island difficult.
The land includes 31 acres of delicate wetlands, home to a growing population of rare blue herons that nest in the trees. A carefully balanced plan would be needed to break ground, requiring approval from federal and local authorities. Where others saw obstacles, Augustin Rosas-Maxemin saw only the upside in this uncommon bay front promontory. He was determined to bring an upscale, architecturally rich community to the land while remaining sensitive to the environment and protecting the abundant local wildlife.
Years later his dream is reality and Arthur Von Thaden is among the first to buy one of the 62 homes. He says he was not only drawn to the location, but the wonderful setting. Designed by architect Chris Craiker, Arthurs home is done in the craftsman-style, but offers a contemporary feel with 21st century amenities.
