Home repair expert Henry Harrison shows a guest how to put old kitchen cabinets to use by hanging them in the garage. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a three.

Steps:

1. Decide where you want the cabinets and mark that position using a wax pencil. Mount a long 2x4 on the wall so the bottom of the cabinets can rest on it while you secure them (figure A). Use a level to position the 2x4 and pre-drill pilot holes into studs before attaching 2x4 with deck screws.

2. Sit one of the cabinets on the 2x4 and mark the wall studs at the top of the cabinets so you know where to position cross members.

3. Measure between wall studs to get length for cross members then cut members from 2x4s using the chop saw. Be sure to wear safety glasses while working with the saw.

4. Install cross members and secure by driving in deck screws at an angle (figure B). Pre-drill holes before driving in screws. Install cross members between studs to provide mounting points at the top and bottom of cabinets.

5. Position first cabinet and secure by driving in screws through bracing at top and bottom of cabinet and into new cross members (figure C).

6. Continue process until all the cabinets are installed (figure D).
