Faux stone is a lightweight alternative to real stone. Available in numerous types and sizes, it enables a homeowner to create a custom look at a reasonable price. Contractor Lorrie Webb shares some basic instructions for working with this product:

Steps:

  1. Mix thin-set and water to a cake-batter consistency.
  2. Load trowel with mixture and apply a generous amount to the surface (figure A) and back of faux stone.
  3. Press faux stone onto surface (figure B) and wipe off excess mortar.

Tips:

  • The consistency of the adhesive material needed depends on the stone and where you live.
  • Consult a contractor with tile-setting experience if you're considering a large- scale project.
