Retaining Walls

House Detective : Episode HDT-513 -- More Projects »
Retaining walls are used to stabilize steep banks of soil and dirt and to protect property. But as our homeowners in Los Angeles found, water collecting behind the wall can increase pressure, causing the wall to move and crack.

But there is an easy way to fix the problem: weepholes near the bottom of the wall. These holes allow the water to drain before it can build up and cause damage. Weepholes can be built into the wall, or drilled in after the wall is already standing. In either case, it's important to keep them open and clear of debris.

Check the weepholes regularly and clear out leaves and soil. Cracks in a retaining wall are a sign of trouble. If your wall is severely cracked or leaning, call in a professional to evaluate and repair the problem. Replacing a retaining wall can be expensive, depending on the size and materials used. But just a little maintenance will go a long way toward keeping your wall well.
