Figure A
Materials:

spackling compound
sandpaper
screwdriver
mild soap
bonding primer
semi-gloss latex paint (Pure White SW1004)
paintbrushes
rollers/paint tray
water-based, non-yellowing polyurethane
cabinet hardware (Amerock Guardian) (Home Depot)

Steps:

1. Remove the doors and all the hardware. If replacing the latter, fill all the holes with sandable spackling compound. Once dry, wash all surfaces with a mild soap and water solution.

2. Sand both the doors and the cabinets with 220-grit sandpaper to give the paint something to adhere to. Once the gloss is removed, wipe the dust off and prime each door and cabinet. Let dry.

3. Apply two coats of paint, allowing it to dry between layers. For a distressed look, sand the door edges and near the handle with 150-grit paper to remove areas of new paint to expose bare wood (figure A).

4. For added protection, apply a coat of polyurethane and let dry.

5. Replace hardware and hang doors.
