Before: The kitchen had a pass-through to the dining area, but it was so small and cramped that it served little useful purpose.
PHOTO

After: Enlarging the pass-through not only made it more functional, but it added a new casual eating area and opened up the space for both rooms.
John and Meghan Lockwood transplanted themselves from a tiny Manhattan apartment to their first home outside the city. Like any first home, they have been trying to deal with all the projects that they face and are still struggling to make this their "forever home."

Meg and John are looking to Steve and his team to make their entertaining and cooking tasks easier by creating a larger pass-through in the kitchen.

Following is a summary of the basic steps as seen in this Don't Sweat It project, as well as a list of tools and materials used.

Materials and tools:

countertop (ours was a countertop from Ikea)
1x6, 8-ft. length (3)
casing (30 linear ft.)
table saw
circular saw
reciprocating saw
electric miter saw
drill

Steps:

1. Using a prybar and hammer, carefully loosen the upper cabinets from their wall mounts (figure A).

2. Carefully lift the cabinets down and set them aside.

Note: For this kitchen project, the old cabinets were saved in order to be repurposed and reinstalled later.

3. Measure, mark, and carefully remove the wall section.

4. Use a reciprocating saw to cut through wall studs and other heavy materials (figures B and C).

5. Remove the existing countertop.

6. Measure and install countertop to fit the new opening in the wall.

7. Cut 1x6 pieces to length to cover newly exposed wall areas to frame out the opening.

8. Install trim to match existing decor.

8. Paint or stain to your preference.
