Figure A
Matt Fox researched how to clean and paint the existing acoustic tile. Cleaning it is rather difficult because they are fairly fragile and can't take much handling . Dab minor small stains off with a cotton ball and bleach. Another option is painting it.

Painting Acoustic Tile

Materials:

tarp
paint
roller

Steps:

  1. Remove the tile and place it on a tarp. Roll on a new coat of paint.
  2. For tiles with more texture, use a foam roller that's split every 1/2 inch(figure A). This will conform to the rough texture and give better and gentler coverage of the tile.

Tip: If the purpose of the tile is to deaden noise, painting it will limit the effectiveness of its task. The more coats of paint, the less noise reduction. Replace old tile to retain this property.
